Twelve years after their first World Championship title, Norway wrote handball history in Sao Paulo: By beating the brave fighting French team 32:24 (19:13) in the final they are the second team after Denmark (1996/97) to be World Champion, European Champion and Olympic Champion at the same time.

After the XX World Championship in Brazil has come to an end with Norway as World Champion, nearly all decisions concerning the Qualification for the Women’s Olympic Handball Tournament 2012 in London are taken. Thanks to the Norwegian victory (current European Champion), Sweden qualified directly for the 2012 London Olympic Games as European representative (Silver medalist at the EHF EURO 2010).

They knew whom to thank after the final whistle: All Spanish players jumped upon goalkeeper Silvia Navarro, as she had decided the Bronze final nearly on her own. In the end, the 24:18 victory over Denmark meant the first ever medal for Spanish women at a World Championship after their fourth position in 2009. After ranking fourth at the European Championship 2010, Denmark missed very tightly again a medal.

Bitter end for Angola, joy for Croatia – and the second best ever World Championship position for both teams: By beating the African Champion, the Europeans reached the seventh place. But despite losing this game, Angola still can hope for a straight ticket to the 2012 London Olympics, if they win the African Championship in January 2012.

What a sensational result: World Championship host Brazil was absolute eager to win the encounter for the fifth place, whilst defending champion Russia failed miserably. Winning this game in an absolute clear way 20:36 Brazil took their best ever result at World Championships. The only match they lost was decisive, as it was the quarter-final against Spain, which meant the end of the medal dream. But players and fans celebrated their final victory in this home ground tournament.

Defence wall against high speed attacks fight for the Gold medal: France against Norway will be the composition of the final of the XX Women’s World Championship. After France had beaten Denmark in the first semi-final, Norway left Spain chanceless in the second semi with a clear 30:22 victory. 12 years ago Norway vs. France had already been the final of a Women’s World Championship with the Northern Europeans as the lucky 25:24 winner after two extra times. Like in 2009 (23:27 against France in Nanjing) Spain missed the final. The Iberians will face Denmark on Sunday in the Bronze final.

For the fourth time in history after 1999, 2003 and 2009 France reached the final of a Women’s World Championship. They beat Denmark 28:23 in the first semi in Sao Paulo and will now wait to know their opponent for the battle of the title. Norway will face Spain in the second semi.
