As expected the Qatar team of Al-Rayyan have taken the seventh place at the IHF Super Globe. They beat Southern Stars clearly – and the Australians finish the tournament ranked eighth as in 2010.

Super Globe 2011, Placement match 7/8:
Al-Rayyan (QAT) – Southern Stars (AUS) 36:21 (17:7)

First victory for Al-Rayyan in this tournament: After two defeats and one draw the Qataris celebrated their first success and finish the tournament seventh – a little less they had hoped for before. In their last match coach Brahim Jabbes gave the domestic Qatari players a lot of time on the field. In the first half the recruited players from Croatia and Slovenia had built the base for the success, but already then the Qataris set some signs.
On the other hand one could see that the rest day after three matches in three days was a kind of well of power, as they had recovered and played much better than on Monday. The first ten minutes were equal even as Al-Rayyan led the whole game. But then Al-Rayyan scored several counter attack goals after Southern Stars had lost the ball in attacks and paved the winner’s way. They extended the gap from 9:4 to 17:7 at the break. Then Jabbes changed all of his team – and the Qataris could show their strength, cheered by their spectators.
Al-Rayyan even extended the gap from ten goals at the break to 16 in only 13 minutes (29:13). But then the Australians managed to keep the distance until the end.

Statements after the match:
Taip Ramadani, coach Southern Stars: We are a little bit disappointed about our performance today – but it’s my major intention to thank the organizers that we could be part of this great tournament. We are pleased to play, practise and develop at the IHF Super Globe.
Ognjen Latinovic, player Southern Stars: Since our first participation in 2010 we have clearly improved as a team. I also say thank you to all organizers, partners and sponsors from Qatar which made it possible for us to play here.
Brahim Jabbes, coach Al-Rayyaan: I am satisfied with today’s match, as we played 75 per cent with local players. This was a good preparation for them, as we have an important league match on Sunday. Under all circumstances I am satisfied with our performance in general. Our recruited players arrived in the morning of the first match and were tired – and we could not prepare ourselves well enough. Later-on our improvement was visible and I hope we will have the opportunity to be part of the IHF Super Globe again, as then we have the chance to show better results.
Alshazli Naserddine, player Al-Rayyan: Our general performance could have been better, but as our coach mentioned, the time for preparation with the whole team was too short.
