China’s 3-3 defence

Enter Title

The majority of the teams at the WCh use the 6-0 formation as basic defence system.  In the match against ANG the team from CHN also started almost every defence phase with this formation, but then increased the activities against the opponent by changing to a 3-3 formation. Especially in first half time this defence system caused huge difficulties for Angola’s attackers, which then resulted in several mistakes. One of examples of the 3-3 activity is illustrated on the following pictures.

Ball is in possession of the center back-court attacker (CB) of ANG. The left half defender (LH), front center defender (FC) and right half defender (RH) of CHN take their positions close to the free-throw line. The left outside defender (LO) and right outside defender (RO) position near the goalkeeper area line to defend in the middle of the defence formation and to control simultaneously the wings of the opponent. The back center defender (BC) is guarding the line player.  RB of ANG is in possession of the ball. The defence formation of CHN is almost the same. This position forces the ANG back-court attackers to push away from the CHN goal area
The ball comes back to the CB. The RH defender expects the action between CB and LB and makes one step forward. The FC defender controls the middle and LH is moving backwards.
The position of RH and RO defenders does not offer ANG attackers many possibilities for effective shots at larger distance.
