“Exciting atmosphere in Sweden”

Interview with the Australian ambassador for Sweden 2011 Violi Calvert

Do you believe that the World Championship in Sweden will be a real highlight for international handball?

Violi Calvert: I have been to six World Championships and found each one to be an event which the handball world considers to be the pinnacle of handball competitions for the year. The time

leading up to the event is full of excitement, starting from the qualification rounds. Once a team is qualified, then the preparation becomes more intense. This is especially true with the developing handball country such as Australia. After the qualification, then a series of training camps, implementation of fitness regime and national championships form part of the process by which team members are selected. Once the team selection is finalized, then the preparation is directed towards making the players function cohesively and effectively as a unit. The other competing nations likewise would be undertaking their own programme of preparation.

What do you expect from host Sweden in terms of sports and organization?

Violi Calvert: The World Championship in Sweden no doubt will bring out the best in all the participating countries. The information and promotional video clips that are being progressively publicized on the website of the 2011 World Championship reflect the great effort that everyone in the organizing committee are exerting to ensure the success of this event. The messages of “It is in Us All” and “The Ball is in the Air” video clips are great in setting an exciting atmosphere for the competition. I expect Sweden to provide an excellent setting and competition arrangements to enable all teams to do their best. In addition I also expect Sweden to promote the feeling of camaraderie between the handball nations, turning the event into a challenging but friendly competition.

What are your expectations concerning the performance of your team in Sweden?

Violi Calvert: The Australian team in particular has great odds to overcome but they are sure to give the competition their best shot, to demonstrate their passion for the sport and for their country. The players contribute towards the cost of their participation, in addition to taking time off work or study. However, they will undoubtedly show the 'true Aussie fighting spirit' for which they have been known and respected in the handball world. Regardless of who they play against, the team will do its best to the last second of each game, and we cannot ask for more.

Which teams do you rate main contenders for the World Championship title?

Violi Calvert: Personally I do not feel qualified enough to be able to rate the teams. However, the handball world knows who the top teams are. I will let the teams’ performance show who they are.

Which players might become the big stars in Sweden?

Violi Calvert: For me, the big stars are those who struggle the most and keep trying their best. At the same token, I admire very much all the big achievers and I am sure they will again shine in Sweden.
