Szmal has been an essential part of his national team for years. Thanks to his saves Polish handball has become established in the top of the world for several years. Also in his private life, the IHF World Handball Player of the Year 2009 is connected with his sport: His uncle, Andreas Mientus, was Polish goalkeeper, and his wife Agnes is a handball player, too.
