Speed, intensive duels, creative techniques

No question about it: On the last match day of the Preliminary Round, the best teams of the Olympic tournament in Singapore by far competed against each other – Korea and France.
In the very captivating match, France could only prevail in the last minute, after the Koreans had caught up 5 goals they were down in the 40th minute thanks to great efforts and after they had even gained the lead 5 minutes before the end.
Korea showed an excellent performance, especially regarding the speed – during 60 minutes (!) they took almost every opportunity to achieve a fast break or a fast throw-off. France focused on their well-known and brilliant defense in the duels by a 6:0 and a 5:1 defense formation. Especially the offensive fast break defense from the center line was a highlight.
Both teams played on an incredibly high level with regard to the creative repertoire of fakes, throwing and passing variations. They are highly athletically trained, mainly in terms of speed and jumping power.
Clear features of the individual training of young players who could be tomorrow’s top stars.
The pictures show a creative backhand pass while jumping of Korea’s left back court player Hyeon Sik Lee who scored 16 goals (!) in this match alone. A technique of passing which is rather rare even among world class players.

Lee who bounces the ball is approaching the French 5:1 defense.
Body fake to the left of Lee, while the center back is crossing the free-throw line.
Lee takes a long step to the left to the inside, parallel to the free-throw line.

Beginning of a jump shot, while the center back blocks the center attacking player.

Behind the defense, the pivot breaks clear to the inside in the center of the defense. This action is observed by Lee who starts a backhand pass while jumping.
With the first sign of pass from right back player to center back player, she is again offensively blocking the direct passing route.
Perfectly timed passing to the pivot who is completely free.

Dive shot of the pivot…

…and the goal giving the lead to 11:10 in the 19th minute.
