BRA vs RUS

Brazil with great playing philosophy in defense

In the historic first handball match of the women’s youth in Singapore, the Russian team clearly defeated Brazil (35:20).
Nevertheless, Brazil performed well particularly in defense: the return phase of the Brazilians is especially noteworthy. After turnovers, the back court players switched very quickly and achieved to defend several long fast-break passes of the Russians in the first wave of fast-break. The other wing players and pivots however tried to interrupt the second wave of the opponents actively and offensively at an early stage.
The 6:0 defending formation also showed active and offensive ways of defending, as you can see on the pictures. The offensive half defender caused a traveling foul of the opponent. The shorthanded 4:1 defense which had to go very long ways to the corresponding sides was also unusual.

In picture 1 the left back court player runs to the middle with the ball after a deke. The left half defender runs to the center back.
The half defender blocks the direct way of passing to the center back just in time.
The left back court player cannot pass the ball and has to take a further step due to the delay.

The left back court player passes the ball to the right back court player, but after a traveling foul which is immediately punished by the referees.

The right back court player still receives the ball. The Brazilian outside defender should return faster, as her opponent on the right wing position is free. It’s obvious that the outside defender, in waiting position, faces only disadvantages against the physically stronger back court player. In addition the right wing player is still free. In this situation the referees help by whistling (traveling foul)!
