Women’s Final: Norway – Denmark 2:0 (18:14, 20:16)
They danced on the field, they jumped over each other, they shouted and sang: Norway has won the women’s final of the IV Beach Handball World Championships in Antalya by beating Denmark in the Nordic duel 2:0. For the Norwegians it was the first medal ever at a Beach Handball WCH, and it’s Gold! Both teams have reached a final for the first time, and for Denmark it was even their first appearance ever at a WCH – so they could start without pressure, as their result was a big surprise. Last year the Norwegians were close to gold at the EURO on home soil, but were beaten in the final shoot-out by Italy. And the title in Antalya is worth even more, as three important players from last year weren’t able to join the team. Linn Sulland, Marit Malm Frafjord and Anja Edin are currently preparing with the indoor national team. For both nations it might give a re-match in December at the indoor EURO, hosted by Denmark and Norway. The most successful ever indoor handball coach, the Russian legend Vladimir Maximov, who attended the final day in Antalya, said: “Norway against Denmark is no beach handball, it’s ice handball.”
The first period was equal until the score of 6:6 and was imprinted by two outstanding goalkeepers, Hanne Frandsen (Denmark) and Ingrid Hjelmeland (Norway). But from the middle of the first period Norway increased the gap and decided it close to the end by scoring the 18:14.
The second period was quite equal, as the intermediate result after five minutes was 8:6 for Norway. But then the great time of Arnhild Holmlinden, the best player of the final, started. With eight consecutive points for Norway she decided the second period on her own. By scoring the 19:12 the first ever Beach title for Norway was safe and well. The winner’s trophy will be handed over by IHF President Hassan Moustafa to Norway after the men’s final, but the Danes will celebrated their Silver like Gold, because they couldn’t expect this result after two defeats right at the Beach Handball WCHs start.
