The national tournament to
determine the champions of Greenland, the GrønlandsBanken GM 2018, is currently
underway in Innussivik, after opening on May 1. A total of 12 teams are
battling for the trophies, with six sides competing in each the men’s and
women’s categories.
The competition is played in a
round-robin format, where teams gain points for wins and draws. At the end of
the round-robin matches the teams with the most points will qualify for the
finals and bronze-medal games, played on Sunday May 6.
GSS Handball Club are the clear
favourites to take the titles, in both the men’s and women’s competitions, as
they have won the trophies at every edition of the Greenland Championship since
2010. In total, GSS’ women’s side have claimed the title 14 times, followed by
NÛK Handball Club with nine gold medals. NÛK have taken the men’s trophy 13
times, while GSS have won on 12 occasions.
The current Greenland
Championship also serves as an opportunity to prepare for the 2018 Pan American
Men’s Handball Championship, which will also take place in Innussivik in June. 12
teams will compete for the continental title, and the top three sides will
qualify for the 26th IHF Men’s World Championship in January 2019.
