Three men’s and four women’s teams will compete for the final places at the 2019 Pan American Games handball tournaments which will take place later this year in Lima, Peru, from 26 July – 11 August.

The men’s and women’s handball competitions will be held from 24 July – 3 August and are part of the event which will see nearly 7,000 athletes competing in 39 sports across 62 disciplines.

In total, 17 days of competitions and ceremonies will be held in 14 districts of Lima and Callao, in venues including VIDENA, Villa Maria del Triunfo Sports Complex, Callao Regional Sports Village, Villa El Salvador Sports Centre and Punta Rocas, amongst others.

The winners of both the men’s and women’s handball competitions will qualify directly through to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Qualification and Competition System for Lima 2019
Both the men’s and women’s handball tournaments at Lima 2019 feature eight teams each. 

As hosts, Peru qualify for each tournament automatically. They are joined by the top two in the South American Games, top three from the Central American and Caribbean Games and winners of the North Zone Play-Off. The eighth, and remaining spot, is reserved for the ‘Last Chance Tournament’ winners.

Last Chance Tournaments
The third-placed teams from the South American Games, fourth and fifth-placed from the Central and American and Caribbean Games, and the unqualified teams from the North Zone Play-Offs were entitled to compete in the final qualification tournaments for the right to play at Lima 2019.

The women’s last chance tournament will feature Canada (CAN), Chile (CHI), Guatemala (GUA) and Mexico (MEX) playing from Tuesday 26 – Thursday 28 March in Mexico City, Mexico, while the men’s tournament will take place from Thursday 11 – Saturday 13 April in Santiago de Chile, Chile, and features hosts Chile (CHI) alongside Colombia (COL) and Dominican Republic (DOM).
