Path to Buenos Aires 2018: 2017 IHF Women’s U17 Beach Handball World
Championship - 10th
Overview
A heartbreaking 9:8 shoot-out
loss to host nation Paraguay in the bronze medal match of the 2017 Pan American
Youth (U17) Beach Handball Championship was slightly smoothed by the knowledge
the Octavio Sanchez’s team grabbed fourth place and the last ticket through to
the 2017 IHF Women’s U17 World Championship in Mauritius – and eventually a
place at the Youth Olympic Games in Argentina, thanks to their fellow South
American side qualifying directly as hosts.
With a team that has been together for
over two years now, Venezuela will look to improve on their results in
Mauritius which included 2:0 defeats against China and Thailand, plus a win
over the hosts in the preliminary round.
This was followed by two 2:0 losses
against Portugal and Spain in the main round which meant a top eight place was
out of their grasp, despite a 2:0 victory over American Samoa sandwiched in-between.
In the 9-14 placement round, two 2:0
wins against Australia and Paraguay and a 2:0 loss against Croatia meant that a
top 10 global finish was achieved, added to left wing Milangela Tovar who
finished as the ninth best goalscorer in the whole tournament, who ended with
87 points.
Six of the nine players named by
Venezuela for Buenos Aires played in Mauritius, with Paola Parra, Emilis Ojeda
and Milena Cordero added to the Youth Olympic Games team. Most of the team play
their club handball for the Carabobo, Yaracuy and the Bolivar teams.
