The
debut South and Central America Women’s Senior Clubs Championship has completed
in Concordia, Brazil, after five intensive days of action featuring 15 matches
played by six teams from four different countries in a round-robin format.
In
the end, it all hinged on the final match involving two teams from the host
nation as the winners of A.A. Concordia and UNIP/Sao Bernardo would not only
become regional champions, but would book their tickets to the inaugural
edition of the IHF Women’s Super Globe which will be played in China later this
year.
Going into that final game, both Brazilian
teams were on eight points each, having won all four of their previous matches,
but Concordia had the larger goal difference of +75, compared to +43 of their
rivals from Sao Bernardo. Concordia had also scored more goals (136) than their
opponents overall too (112).
Concordia had built up their impressive
goalscoring feat thanks to wins over Club Vieux Gaulois (49:7),Scuola Italiana
di Montevideo (32:16), Club Ferro Carril Oeste (27:21) and Club Manuel Dorrego
(28:17), while UNIP/Sao Bernardo could only manage a tight 20:19 win over Club
Ferro Carril Oeste (20:19) and 21:19 defeat of Club Manuel Dorrego in addition
to their other, more comfortable victories.
In the unofficial final, both Brazilian teams
could not even be separated at the break as a defensive opening 30 minutes saw
the half finish 9:9, and in an even more defensively-minded second period, both
teams could only score seven times each, as UNIP/Sao Bernardo could not get
that extra goal needed to ensure victory and the ticket to China.
Sabrina Canata top-scored in the game
alongside teammate Agda Goncalves with five goals, but they were beaten to
second and third place with 26 and 24 goals respectively in the overall
goalscoring charts by Scuola Italiana di Montevideo’s Sofi Cherone, who
registered 38 goals in total.
