The United States of America (USA) are currently
hosting the Men’s IHF Trophy North American & Caribbean Zone I
Championships at the Lifezone 360 Facility in West Dundee, Illinois this week
(8-12 May).
With the tournament at the midway stage, the picture
is becoming clearer about who holds the regional strength in this developmental
tournament.
In the youth competition (players born on or after 1
January 2000), Canada are the team to beat, having won both of their games so
far, against Martinique (33:26) and a dominating 20-goal victory against the
hosts USA (39:19).
However, the hosts did have something to celebrate as
a goal in the closing seconds against Martinique last night ensured a 34:33
victory.
For the juniors (players born on or after 1 January
1998), Martinique are looking strong, having beaten Canada (28:24) and Dominica
(42:19) in their two group games but hosts USA are also showing their strength
with an impressive 60:14 win over Haiti and 46:15 win over Dominica.
With just two match days remaining, the teams which
finish top of their respective age categories in the round-robin tournament
will be crowned IHF Trophy winners.
