The South and Central American qualification for the 2019 IHF Men’s Junior (U21) World Championship throws off in Palmira, Colombia on Wednesday April 3, with six teams competing for three places at the final tournament. Argentina, Paraguay, Colombia, Brazil, Chile and Venezuela will play a round-robin competition from Wednesday through till Sunday April 7, when the top three teams will secure their berths at the World Championship in Spain this coming July.

The qualification event will be played on a round-robin basis after Uruguay withdrew from the competition, with the hosts opening the five-day tournament against Chile on Wednesday at 16:00 local time (UTC -5).

As finalists of all Pan American Men’s Junior Championship editions, Argentina and Brazil are hot favourites for the title, but all teams are highly motivated to claim a ticket to Spain 2019 and join the participants already qualified from the North American and the Caribbean region – the USA, who booked their place at Spain 2019 through the Continental Phase of the IHF Trophy, which served as the qualification event for the North American and Caribbean region.

The 2019 Men’s Junior World Championship will be played in Spain (Vigo and Pontevedro) from July 16 to 28. The hosts are also the reigning champions, having claimed their first ever Junior world title at the previous edition in Algeria in 2017. No team from the South and Central American region has ever won a medal at the event – the best result of a nation from this region was Brazil’s sixth place in 2013.

All matches will be streamed live on the YouTube channel of the Colombian Handball Federation.
