Overview
Germany have a mixed history in
the IHF Women’s Youth (U18) World Championship. Out of six editions of the
Youth World Championship, they have qualified for three. They ranked outside
the top 10 at two of the events, but have also celebrated a medal – silver, in
2014.
2018 looks to be a promising year
for the Germany team, as the current Youth squad have already made history by
winning the nation’s first Under 17 European title last summer. Such a record
means this squad are one of the strongest favourites to reach the podium at
Poland 2018.
“Proving something as the
European champion is a bigger challenge than becoming European champion. We
know that but want to accept this challenge with full power,” says head coach
Maik Nowak, who has won multiple German championships and Cups coaching club
teams, and led the Youth national squad to the trophy one year ago in Slovakia.
It was one year ago in
Michalovce, Slovakia that Germany defeated Norway 23:18 in the final to win the
European title. En route to the final, they took three wins in three
preliminary round matches, beating Russia, Netherlands and Austria. In the main
round, Germany drew with Hungary and defeated Denmark, thereby qualifying for
the semi-final against France, which they won.
Left back Aimee von Pereira was
named as the Most Valuable Player at the EURO, while Anna Lena Hausherr was
nominated as the best left wing in the All-star Team.
At Poland 2018, Germany will meet
Romania, hosts Poland, Brazil, Angola and Slovakia in the preliminary round.
