The Greece women’s beach handball team have reached the
final round of voting for the World Games Athlete of the Year 2018. Greece made
their debut at the IHF Beach Handball World Championship last year in Kazan,
Russia – and ended up as the team raising the trophy. It was Greece’s first
medal at a major international beach handball championship.
The team’s incredible achievement has been recognised by the
International World Games Association, as they were nominated among 25
candidates for the annual Athlete of the Year award. On January 15, the 25
candidates were reduced to 10 based on the votes up to that point.
The Greece women’s beach handball team are in the running
alongside individuals as well as pairs competing in their respective sports,
such as karate, gymnastics and sport climbing. Voting will close on January 31,
2019, and already a record number of votes – over 270,000 – have been cast.
