Nearly
50 active and former handball players and coaches are expected in Nicosia today
as the IHF/ International Olympic Committee (IOC) Olympic Solidarity Course in
Cyprus gets underway, running until Sunday (10 June).
Co-ordinated
by the Cyprus Handball Federation and Cyprus Olympic Committee, the course will
be run by IHF Lecturer Martin Tuma, who will be assisted by local expert
Andreas Andreou at two venues – Olympic House and the European University
Sports Hall.
The
jam-packed course will feature five days full of practical and classroom-based
activities and workshops covering a variety of topics including mini handball,
passing and catching, defence: individual skills, shooting, goalkeeper skills,
coaching of youth, match organisation, principles of conditioning and much
more, before ending with a closing ceremony on the final day.
The
first IHF/IOC Olympic Solidarity course in 2018 was held in Rwanda
in February and March earlier this year and was swiftly followed by the second
one, held in Mongolia
from April 9-15. A third course was held in
Faisalabad, Pakistan
last month.
The
Olympic Solidarity programme was introduced by the IOC more than 50 years ago with
the aim of organising assistance for all the National Olympic Committees (NOCs),
particularly those with the greatest needs, through multi-faceted programmes
prioritising athlete development, training of coaches and sports
administrators, and promoting the Olympic Ideals (Olympic Charter, rule 5).
