The Senior African Championship – men and women – in Rabat, Morocco, is in full swing and the Preliminary Rounds have been completed. All favoured teams, which hope for their straight tickets to the 2012 Olympic Games in London, have made their way to the quarter-finals. The winners of both tournaments qualify directly for the Olympics, both runners-ups book their ticket for the Olympic Qualification Tournaments (men 6-8 April, women 25-27 May). Finals and bronze finals will be played on 20 January.
Summaries of the Preliminary Rounds:
Men’s tournament:
In Group A Tunisia finished as clear number one with ten points from five matches ahead of Morocco (eight points). The Tunisians clearly won the direct duel 26:18. Aside DR Congo (third ranked with six points) and Senegal (fourth ranked with four points) qualified for the quarter-finals, which Congo and Gabon missed.
In Group B the goal difference had to decide for the number one and number two positions. After the 34:34 draw in their direct duel, Egypt and Algeria were equal after the Preliminary Round with nine points each. Due to their better goal difference Egypt ranks first ahead of Algeria, Angola (third with six points) and Cameroon (fourth with four points). Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso missed the qualification for the knock-out stage.
Due to those results the composition of the quarter-finals is as follows:
- Egypt vs. Senegal
- DR Congo vs. Algeria
- Tunisia vs. Cameroon
- Angola vs. Morocco
Ivory Coast and Congo compete for the ninth and tenth place, whilst Burkina Faso and Gabon face in the 11/12 placement match.
Women’s tournament:In Group A defending champion Angola had no problems to secure four victories in four matches and took the first position. DR Congo secured the second rank due to their victory over Cameroon – as both were equal with four points in the end. Ivory Coast qualified for the quarter-finals as fourth ranked team with three points.
In Group B Tunisia was unbeatable, as they won all four games including the top duel against the second ranked team from Algeria 30:18. Congo (third with six points) and Senegal (fourth with two points) qualified for the quarter-finals, too.
Whilst Egypt and Morocco play for the ninth and tenth rank, those are the matches of the quarter-finals, played on Wednesday 18 January, including the top clash between Tunisia and Ivory Coast. Both teams have just played at the World Championship in Brazil:
- Angola vs. Senegal
- DR Congo vs. Congo
