IHF President visits five African countries in seven days
IHF President Dr Hassan Moustafa is currently on a busy visit to five African countries. Starting point on Thursday was Cameroon, where Dr Moustafa not only met the President of the Confédération Africaine de Handball (CAHB), Mansourou Aremou, but also the President of Cameroon handball federation, the Sports Minister and the President of the National Olympic Committee. Next step was Kinshasa, the capitol of the Democratic Republic of Congo. There the IHF President met the Executive Committee of the national handball federation and the Sports and Youth Minister.
By crossing the River Congo Moustafa travelled to Congo, where he met the Sports Minister, the President of the National Olympic Committee and the State Minister and opened in a ceremony the Continental Phase of the IHF Men’s Challenge Trophy in Brazzaville on 9 May. From 9 to 15 May six teams from Burundi, Benin, Mozambique, Congo Brazzaville, Mauritius and Senegal are competing against eachother at this tournament.
From Congo, Moustafa left to Nairobi, to meet with the President and the Secretary General of the Kenyan Amateur Handball Association.
Last step of his visit is Lusaka in Zambia, today Moustafa will attend the official launch of the Olympic Youth Development Center by IOC President Jacques Rogge and the Zambian President. Under the banner “Sports for Hope”, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is providing young people in developing countries with opportunities to practise sport and be educated on the Olympic values. The Olympic Youth Development Centre in Lusaka is the first project to come out of the Sports for Hope programme. Built at an overall cost of USD 10.3 million, the multisport facility provides sport-for-all activities accessible to the entire population of Lusaka. The IHF donated the handball floor for this centre. The centre develops elite performance for athletes on local, regional and national levels in close cooperation with international and national federations.
