After 48 matches in Port Said, France have retained the MHC Men’s Mediterranean Championship after winning eight out of eight games in the Egyptian city.

France’s men won the last edition in February 2018, and their women also won the 2018 edition back in April. The next MHC Women’s Championship – the 14th edition – will take place from 14-21 April.

The preliminary group stages saw Montenegro top Group A on 24 points with five wins, while Romania finished in second with 19 points (four wins) and Tunisia third with 15 points (three wins). Algeria (8.5 points), Saudi Arabia (8) and Libya (0.5) were 4-6th place respectively.

In Group B, France topped the table, with 23.5 points from five wins, followed by Egypt (19.5 points), Turkey (14), Italy (11), Morocco (7) and United Arab Emirates (0).

The quarter-finals saw host nation Egypt beat Tunisia comfortably while eventual champions France dispatched Algeria by 19 goals (28:9). Montenegro were made to work early on but overcame Italy eventually (21:16), and guest nation Romania beat Turkey 24:13.

A one-sided semi-final saw France beat Romania 22:15, but the other semi-final was extremely tight as Montenegro ended up with a one-goal (18:17) win over the hosts, who had won the second period.

Egypt did manage to pick themselves up for the bronze medal match though defeating Romania by five (21:16), while in the final Montenegro took the first period clearly (11:8) against France, but the French took the second period narrowly (10:9) to set up a third period with the Montenegrins knowing even a one-goal loss would be enough for the gold medal.

But in the end, France overpowered them to take a three-goal win (10:7) and squeeze past their opponents by one goal at the final buzzer, 28:27.

Following the final, trophy and medal presentations were made, including the All-Star Team.
