Overview

As silver medallists at the 2015 AHF Asian Beach Handball Championship held on home soil in Muscat back in May, Oman come to Budapest in 2016 keeping their ever-present record at the IHF Beach Handball World Championships since it started in 2004 intact.

In fact, an impressive win over Qatar – the Asian continents’ supreme beach team – in the final match of the round-robin series in Muscat last year was the highlight as Homood Al-Hasani’s team won both periods 20-18.

Equal on points with Bahrain and Pakistan, Oman’s dominant amount of periods won meant they could stand second on the podium and start planning for Budapest 2016.

Coach Hamood Al-Hasani is also coach for the strong Muscat BHC in Oman and has described his sides’ group in Hungary as “very difficult”, but the 43-year-old is hopeful of fighting for a place in the latter rounds to make up for their disappointment of finishing last at Brazil 2014, in 12th position, and took his squad to Hungary on 1 July for a training camp, ending on 11 July.

The provisional Oman squad features eight players from the Muscat club along with the others playing for Oman Club, Al Seeb and Ahli Sidab.

Goalkeepers Hussain Al-Jabri and Muneer Al-Bulushi are key players for their team and Al-Bulushi will be hoping he is celebrating a happy birthday on 15 July when he turns 30.

Oman’s record at the world championship has seen them play 33 games, winning 11 and losing 22. They have won 48 periods and lost 47, scoring 1,066 points in the process.
