Overview
Could the resurgence of Republic of Korea in
recent years continue? With their junior team winning bronze at the 2018 IHF
Women’s Junior World Championship earlier this month in Debrecen, Hungary, the
pressure is on the Korean youth team to equal that feat – and replicate their
result from the 2016 edition of the youth championship, held in Bratislava,
Slovakia.
Two 17-year-old players were part of the squad
in Hungary with right back Ji In Jung and centre back Geum-Jeong
Kim playing three and five games respectively, scoring three
and four goals – they will expect to play a lot more under Coach Oh in Poland
as they aim to be on the podium again.
As usual, Korea have little competition on
their continental courts in Asia and will look to European teams to play
against before the tournament. They qualified for Poland having won their
seventh-straight AHF Asian Women’s Youth Championship – held in Jakarta,
Indonesia last August.
Korea won all six of their games, including
the title decider in their final match – and the last match of the championship,
where they beat Japan 34:20 to end on 12 points. The record in Indonesia was
impressive with wins over Kazakhstan (49:16), hosts Indonesia (60:11),
Uzbekistan (49:16), China (42:18) and then Japan.
