From Friday 30 November until Wednesday 12 December, Kumamoto, Japan will host the 17th Asian Handball Federation (AHF) Asian Womens Championship.

 

10 teams will be involved in two initial Preliminary Round groups hosts Japan (JPN), Kazakhstan (KAZ), Iran (IRI), New Zealand (NZL) and Australia (AUS) in Group A, while Group B features Korea Republic (KOR), China (CHN), Hong Kong (HKG), Singapore (SGP) and India (IND).

 

The preliminary round matches will be played on a round-robin basis with two games per matchday. The top two teams in each group then go directly through to the semi-finals with the remaining teams battling it out for positions 5-10.

 

Three venues will be used at the event which also functions as a test event for the 2019 IHF Womens World Championship which starts in one year in Kumamoto. The Yatsushiro City Gymnasium and Yamaga City Gymnasium will be used for the preliminary round games while the Kumamoto Prefectural Gymnasium will be used for the final three matchdays.

 

The 2018 edition is the first time that New Zealand, Australia and Singapore have appeared in the senior womens continental championship.

 

Korea are the title holders, having won the previous edition, in March 2017 on home ground, beating Japan 30:20 in the final.
