The Popki Stadium in Jakarta saw Korea women dominate from start to finish as the seventh edition of the Asian Women’s Youth Championship took place in Indonesia from 20-28 August.

Just like the women’s junior team, who won the Asian Women’s Junior Championship last month, and with it, continued their complete domination of the competition, having won all 14 editions, the youth team emulated their elder colleagues and claimed their seventh title in a row out of seven editions.

The 2017 championship was held over 21 games, with each team playing each other once in a league format, and the top side being crowned as Asian champions.

Dr Ahmed Abu Al Lail, Executive Director of the Asian Handball Federation helped to open the championship at an engaging opening ceremony for the seven teams participating: Hong Kong, Japan, China, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Indonesia and Korea.

Korea won all six of their games, including the winner-takes-all clash in their final match – and the last match of the championship –, beating Japan 34:20 to end on 12 points with Japan on 10 points in second. China finished in the bronze medal position on eight points.

The event also acted as a test event for the men’s and women’s handball competitions at the 18th Asian Games which will be held in August and September 2018 in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia.

The results mean that Korea, Japan, China and Kazakhstan qualify for the 2018 IHF Women’s Youth World Championship in Poland next year.
