to Buenos Aires 2018: Re-Allocation Place
With the main message to their team
from the Handball Association of Hong Kong, China, to just “enjoy the game”,
the young beach handball team have no pressure in Buenos Aires as they make
history for their small nation, becoming the first team sport athletes from Hong Kong to compete in a Youth
Olympic Games.
Hong Kong have a history in beach handball nearly
as long as the sport itself, with a number of national teams
representing the country on sand and the country having hosted the 2013
AHF Men’s and Women’s Asian Championship.
On the women’s side, the senior team finished in
eighth spot at the first-ever IHF Women’s Beach Handball World Championship
held in Egypt in 2004, but have not appeared since, although they have appeared
in continental championships at all levels.
The team are coached by national,
indoor and beach player, Wai Yu Lam, who recently competed in the 2018 Asian
Games, where her side finished seventh.
Li
Lok Yee, Man Cheuk Lam and Hui Ching Lam have been identified as key players
for the team who will face Venezuela in their opening preliminary group B game,
before taking on Netherlands, Paraguay, Argentina and ending with Turkey.
“I hope my team will give it their best in every
game and explore their knowledge and gain experience in Buenos Aires,” said coach
Lam ahead of making the trip after
taking her side to nearby Taiwan, for a final training camp with the
Chinese Taipei men’s and women’s squads who will also be competing in
Argentina.
“Having
beach handball at the Olympic Games is a huge encouragement for all of our
players,” said Chang Ming Hong, Secretary General of the Handball Association of Hong
Kong to IHF.info. “It will generate interest in
our community and the wider community and that is very important.”
