On 30 January 2016, the winners of the 2016
Men’s Seniors African Nations Cup were determined. Cairo, Egypt welcomed 12
teams but of course only two made it to the final: Egypt and Tunisia.
In the semi-finals, Egypt faced Angola and
Tunisia played Algeria. With ease Egypt defeated Angola (25:15) and Tunisia
beat Algeria clearly by 27:18. Therefore, the fans and spectators could expect
a thrilling final between Egypt and Tunisia – and they were not disappointed.
After the half-time whistle, Egypt was trailing by one and it was clear that
the second half would be just as tough as the first one. The Egypt players said
before the championship that the fans were the secret to success and maybe they
actually were, as Egypt could turn around the match and won the championship on
home ground by 2 goals 21:19.
The third-place play-off was just as exciting
as the final in the first half with a 2-goal lead for Angola. But in the end,
defending champions Algeria could not keep up and were clearly defeated with
25:19.
By winning this championship Egypt not only
clinched their berth for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio but also qualified, just
like Tunisia and Angola, for the 2017 World Championship in France.
