Preliminary round match SUI – ESP, 29:28

The French assistant coach of the men’s national team, Sylvain Nouet, came straight to the point when the preliminary round was finished: “When it comes to the performance level, there are no small nations any more!” This Youth WCh is indeed characterized by a high level of performance. Also in terms of the individual playing skills on the different positions, many teams made clear progress compared to previous Youth World Championships. What’s especially remarkable is that this tournament features many good centre back-court players.

The following series of pictures shows a technically brilliant 1 against 1 action of the Swiss centre back-court player Kevin Jud. Switzerland who succeeded against Spain proved that they, quite rightly, belong to the best youth teams of this tournament. Although they were down, Switzerland came back in the second half, showing a consistently fast-paced game and an effectively tactical playing concept against the Spanish 5:1 defence.

Running centre back-court player receives the ball, whereas the pivot creates a gap to the outside against the right inside defender. The left back moves ahead to the interface between the right outside defender and the half defender.

Right half defender retreats to be able to intercept the feinted pass to the pivot. The room is thus open for a breakthrough to the outside for centre back-court player.  Through an explosive start, centre back-court player gains a clear advantage over his opposing player.
