Cooperating with the Pivot

PR match KOR-RUS, 13 August 2011

Cooperation with the pivot has been one of the essential keys to success in handball in recent years. The level of development concerning cooperation between the back-court players and the pivot, however, differs considerably between the matches of the Youth WCh. It comes as a surprise that teams with traditionally good pivot cooperation such as Croatia or Spain hardly use this central position when it comes to tactics.
However, you could witness fine cooperation, especially between the centre back and the pivot in yesterday’s preliminaries’ match between Serbia and Korea. The picture row shows a suitable technical example from the match Korea against Russia.

The centre back moves towards the left inside defender to pose a threat to the goal through shot feinting.   The centre back changes the moving direction to the inside while the right inside defender is acting offensively.
The pivot’s blocking creates open space towards the middle of the court.  The centre back moves to the non-throwing arm side, keeping the throwing arm down.

With the back to the opponent and a low body position he leads the ball around the defender to feed the pivot.

Being tackled the pivot tries to get the bounce pass single handed.

The pivot takes a step for a jump into the goal area while receiving the ball. The defender holds him from behind.  The pivot executes a jump drive; however, the foul committed by the opponent affects the shot stability.

The referees observe well the situation and decide a 7m.
