Youth WCh 2011, preliminary round, BRN_SRB

Bahrain had a brilliant start at the Men’s Youth World Championship in Argentina and reached a tie against Sweden. Nevertheless the team was disappointed after the final signal, as they had excellent chances to win the game in the final phase. During the whole game Sweden had problems to find effective ways of attacking against the offensive and very flexible 3:3 defence of Bahrain. However, in the second game against Serbia, Bahrain was only in the first half able to live up to its achievement of the first game (11:11). Poorly prepared attacks and missing playing discipline led to a clear default.
The series of pictures shows the very flexible 3:3 defence, which provides the opportunity of very active playing, but also of good defending in case of dangerous attacks. All this requires a great disposition to run on the part of the defence players, which is easy to see in the following game situations.

Basic formation of the 3:3 defence of Bahrain in ball possession of left back-court player.  Pass from left back-court player to centre back-court player. Both offensive half defenders put pressure on their opposing players.
Centre back-court player overruns his opponent player on the left side. Immediately the right half defender moves back to defend in case of an attack. Pass to left back-court player; the defence is well organized and positioned near the location of the ball.

By bouncing the ball the defenders again try to be active and to put pressure on the attacking players.

Right half defender marks player with ball tightly and makes passing difficult, left half defender attacks pass direction to right back-court player.

Right back-court player has to move back to be able to catch the ball coming from left back-court player.  Right back-court player catches ball while standing; attacking pressure is interrupted. .
Left outside defender blocks pass possibility to right wing. At the same time right half defender moves back.  Return pass to right back-court player who catches the ball while standing at the centre-back court position without any pressure.
The defence players act well organized and more defensive when player at centre-back court position is in ball possession.  The defence players move closer to the middle. Then the game is interrupted due to a free-throw.
