Angola – Brazil 27:30 (16:16)

After losing their opening match against Russia the Brazilian girls showed a great fighting spirit against African Champion Angola. In a high tensioned and very close match the South Americans decided the game in the final stage thanks to some great saves (in total 18) of goalkeeper Caroline Martins. Brazil had the better start and increased their lead to 15:12 before the Angolans started the chase to get equal before the break. The second half became a real thriller, as Brazil was in lead most of the time, with Angola never giving up, knowing that they have a tough challenge waiting against Russia. Despite the fact that they tied some times they couldn’t turn the match completely. On the score 26:26, Brazil scored 4 goals while Angola scored only one - and took those very important two points. Top scorers were Albertina Mambrio (Angola) and Francielle da Rocha (Brazil) with seven goals each.

Now, Brazil has two points on their account after their Preliminary Round matches and the chances to reach the semi finals are high. If Angola would reach the semi finals, it would be a big surprise, as they have to beat the clear favored team from Russia in the last match of group A.

Kazakhstan – Australia 45:16 (20:8)

After a thrilling match in the start of the day – the second match in Group B was one-sided. After the 4:41 loss against Denmark yesterday, Australia had a new record in goals scored with their 16 today. However, Kazakhstan was a class of their own against the “Aussies”, who will – not surprisingly – play for the fifth place on Monday and Tuesday. The game was more Australia against Yewgenija Latkina. Kazakhstan’s top scorer hit the back of the net sensationally 18 times – and scored individually more goals than the whole Australian team. Also Aida Zhanarbekova scored ten goals for the Central Asian team. The “Aussies” kept the distance until 7:3, but after that they were overran by Kazhaktshan – who has already qualified for the semi finals thanks to this victory. They will meet Denmark tomorrow for the duel for the first position in Group B in the girls tournament. Australia’s top scorer was Monica Najdovski with five goals.
