From 25 to 29 November 2013, Monterrey in Mexico will be host of the InterContinental Phase of the IHF Trophy. It is the second time that a tournament of the IHF Trophy is going to this North American country, as the Mexican Handball Federation already organized the Zone Phase for North America in 2012. Five national teams in the men’s and five in the women’s competition will compete in the final stage of this prestigious IHF event, attempting to crown themselves as InterContinental Winners of the IHF Trophy. All of the participating teams have previously won their Continental Tournaments and now they stand in front of their final hurdle to reach world glory.
Australia, Moldova, Mexico, Nigeria and Uzbekistan will compete in the men’s tournament, whereas Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, D.R. Congo and Thailand will face off in the women’s part of the competition. The tournaments will be played on a round robin basis, meaning that the team that has most points after four rounds will be declared winner of the InterContinental IHF Trophy.
It is the first time the InterContinental Phase is staged with both men’s and women’s tournament being played at the same time. In the previous edition, the men’s tournament was played in Jaipur, India and the women’s in Almaty, Kazakhstan with Finland winning both of the tournaments.
