On 20 July, 21:30 local
time, the draw for the 2015 Men’s World
Championship in Qatar (15 January to 1 February) will be held at the
Ritz Carlton Hotel in Doha. After the completion of all qualification events,
the International Handball Federation has now
announced the pots and the procedure for the draw, which will be conducted by
Leon Kalin, Chairman of the Commission of Organizing and Competition.
The 24 participants will be
drawn into four preliminary round groups of six teams each.
Those are the pots
according to the IHF seeding list based on performance and compulsory places
for each continent:
Pot 1: Spain (defending World
Champion), France (European champion), Denmark, Croatia
Pot 2: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Poland, Sweden, Slovenia
Pot 3:
Russia, Qatar (host and Asian champion), FYR Macedonia, Algeria (African
champion)
Pot 4: Austria, Argentina (Pan-American champion), Belarus, Czech
Republic
Pot 5: Tunisia, Egypt, Brazil, Bahrain
Pot 6: Iran, United Arab
Emirates, Chile, Germany
The procedure of the draw:
The teams from the pots 6, 5, 4, 2 and 1 will be drawn into their respective row of the groups A-D in this
order. Organizer Qatar has the prerogative
to assign itself to a group of its choice. The remaining teams of pot 3 are
drawn into the groups A-D.
The best four teams of each of
the four preliminary round groups clinch their berth to
the eighth-finals, while the remaining eight
teams face in the President’s Cup for the positions 16 to 24.
Representatives of all 24
participants will be on site at the draw
event - and will gain an in-depth view of the
upcoming World Championship including venue, team hotel tours and workshops.
The event in Qatar is the first Men’s World
Championship to take place in one city, Doha. The venues for the World
Championship are Qatar Handball Association Complex, Al-Sadd Sports Centre,
Lusail Multipurpose Arena and the temporarily built handball arena in the
Aspire Dome.
