The seventh participant of the IHF Super Globe in Doha is confirmed since Sunday 22 June: Sydney University qualified as Oceanian participant for the top club event in Doha (7 to 12 September). It is the third straight appearance in Doha for the Australian students, who again hope for their first ever victory at this competition.
Sydney will face Al-Sadd (Qatar, organizer), FC Barcelona (Spain, defending Super Globe champions) and Esperance Tunis (Tunisia) in the Preliminary Round in group B, while group A is composed by SG Flensburg-Handewitt (Germany, Europe), El-Jaish (Qatar, Asia), Taubate (Brazil, Pan-America) and another Qatar wild card team, which will be confirmed in the next weeks.
At the Oceania qualification in New Caledonia, Sydney University won all respective matches - but was close to get defeated by their local rivals from Melbourne. The students had beaten both New Caledonian sides Dumbea (41:23) and Poya (35:13) clearly, before they had to break more resistance than expected in the All-Australian duel with St. Kilda Melbourne (22:21).
Both Australian teams – who already had fought for the domestic championship in the finals in April with the happy-ending for Sydney – met again in the Oceania final. Melbourne was ahead by 13:12 at the break, but Sydney managed to turn the match around. Thanks to two great saves of their goalkeepers Mickael Alcaraz and Ben Fogerty (penalty shot) in the dying minute, Sydney won the final by 24:23.
