With an impressive opening ceremony featuring Colombian music and dance and all 11 nations taking part in a flag parade, the first day of matches of the inaugural IHF South and Central American Emerging Nations Men’s Championship took place in Palmira, Colombia, yesterday with the hosts getting off to a winning start against Honduras, 36:13.
A 16-goal half-time lead (21:5) was enough to seem through in their Group B encounter, with Santiago Rios Gallego top-scoring with seven goals. Ecuador beat El Salvador 41:30 in the other group B encounter.
Group C saw Guatemala beat Bolivia 35:10 and Peru lose to French Guiana 25:16, while the most impressive victory of the day saw Costa Rica dispatch Panama 63:12, with Jose Gerardo Hidalgo Obregon scoring 11 times for the Costa Ricans.
Today, matchday two, sees five games take place with all 30 games from South America being streamed live via the Colombian Handball Federation YouTube site

The IHF Emerging Nations Championship is for players aged 16-24 years old and builds on the success of the first two IHF Men’s Emerging Nations Championships held in Kosovo (2015) and Bulgaria (2017) which focussed on nations from the European Handball Federation who are part of the IHF’s ‘Four-Year Plan’.
